Chartwells K12 Student Choice Comes to Carrboro High Cafe

During the week of February 18 to 22, Carrboro High School (CHS) hosted a Chartwells Student Choice event that allowed students to taste and vote on different menu concepts, which will end with the implementation of the winning concept in the school’s cafe. The three concepts included Roost, Bok Choy and Butcher + Baker, with each concept having two menu items that represented their distinct styles. Roost boasted “downright tasty chicken” and its menu choices included the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich and the Teriyaki Pineapple Chicken Sandwich. On the other hand, Bok Choy had an Asian flair with options of Sweet and Sour Chicken and Beef Bulgogi. Finally, the Butcher + Baker represented a more traditional deli-style option with its Turkey Swiss Pretzel Roll Sandwich and Chicken Shawarma.

Student Choice ballot Throughout the week, Child Nutrition and Chartwells staff gave out samples of each item to interested students. Students then had the opportunity to vote on their favorite menu item for each day’s featured concept. The Student Choice event culminated on February 22 when students voted on their favorite concept they had tried during the week.

Patrick Wright, a senior, commended the effort, saying it was “the most interesting thing they’ve ever done at CHS.” Wright enjoyed all of the different food choices throughout the week, but claimed his favorite was the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich because the “pickles enhanced the chicken’s spicy flavor.”

Jordan Smith, a junior student volunteer for the Student Choice event, said she chose to help with the effort because she eats the school’s lunch every day. Smith continued optimistically, saying she hoped the event would encourage some students to reconsider their preconceived notions about school lunch. Smith also stated that she wanted students to see how hard the staff works on a daily basis and especially through events catered specifically toward students, like Student Choice.

“We know today’s students are looking for a wider variety of foods and more global flavors on their lunch menus,” said Liz Cartano, director of dining for Chartwells K12 in CHCCS. “Our new Student Choice program is bringing the latest food trends straight to students and letting them decide how to expand their lunch menu. Carrboro High students can be proud that they are among the first schools in the country to experience this innovative program.”

Student Choice concepts After the week of tasty samples, the votes were calculated and the winner was revealed—Roost with 47% of the student vote. Beginning on the week of March 4, the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich will be available every day and the Teriyaki Pineapple Chicken Sandwich will be available on Tuesday and Thursday. These menu items will be added in addition to the current choices, which include, pizza, grab and go salads and wraps and grilled burgers or chicken. CHCCS appreciates all the hard work involved in making Student Choice possible for the students at CHS.
