Chapel Hill High School’s Kimberly Jones Named 2023 Regional Teacher of the Year
Threepeat! CHCCS boasts regional teacher of the year for third year in a row
Kimberly Jones, English teacher at Chapel Hill High School and 2022-23 Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Teacher of the Year, has been named the Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Central Teacher of the Year, one of nine North Carolina Regional Teachers of the Year!
CHCCS teachers have now earned the regional honor for three consecutive years! Last year Brian Link from East Chapel Hill High School won the honor, as did Eugenia Floyd of Mary Scroggs Elementary School in 2020 (Floyd later was named 2021 North Carolina Teacher of the Year.)
Friday afternoon, a team from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction including Floyd, 2022 NC Teacher of the Year Leah Carper and 2013 NC Teacher of the Year Karen Dickerson joined CHCCS Board of Education Chair Rani Dasi, Vice Chair George Griffin, CHCCS Superintendent Nyah Hamlett, Chapel Hill High School Principal Charles Blanchard, family members and guests to make the surprise announcement during a boisterous student assembly. As the shock of the surprise announcement wore off, Mrs. Jones offered words of inspiration to the beaming students.
"Our hope is that you take every opportunity that’s given to you, that you take every lesson that we teach you in our curriculum and through our actions….If you've been in my class, you know I do everything I can to make the learning real….You all have the power everyday to build a better world for yourselves, your children and all of us."
Said Principal Charles Blanchard, “Kim Jones is an equity-centered teacher who has high expectations for all students. She fosters an outstanding culture of community in her classroom that makes every student feel valued. All students should be blessed to have a ‘Mrs. Jones’ in their lives.”
Regional Teachers of the Year are chosen for their dedication, implementation of best practices and their ability to motivate students to achieve their highest potential. Jones will now advance to the competition for 2023 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year.
