CHCCS Holds Swearing-In for School Board Members
Three new school board members and one re-elected member were sworn in at the December 5 meeting at Lincoln Center.
Rani Dasi is beginning her second term on the board. She served as board vice chair from 2016-2017 and chair from 2017-2018. She has also served on the board of the Public School Foundation, the Family Success Alliance and the Walking Classroom Institute. Dasi studied engineering at Northwestern University and earned an MBA in Finance and Accounting from the University of Chicago. In her professional work she has focused on corporate finance and strategic planning.
Jillian La Serna is currently an assistant professor of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She studied cross-cultural language and academic development from California State University-Sacramento and earned her MSA and Ed.D in Educational Leadership from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining the faculty at UNCC, La Serna served as the principal for Carrboro Elementary School. She also worked as a classroom teacher, dual-language reading specialist and assistant principal.
Ashton Powell teaches Biology at the North Carolina School of Science and Math. He holds a PhD in Neurobiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a National Board Certification in Science/Adolescent & Young Adulthood. His experience also includes a stint on both the UNC Faculty Assembly and the UNC System Board of Trustees. In those roles, he has been charged with advising the President of the UNC System and Board of Governors on important issues.
A graduate of the University of Maryland University College, Deon Temne is a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served for 14 years. He also worked in Washington, D.C. for 20 years as a cybersecurity program manager and senior engineering with the United States Department of Commerce. He currently is the chief operating officer for Farmer Foodshare. An advocate for children, Temne has served on the School Improvement Teams for both Rashkis Elementary and Northside Elementary, as well as the Equity Advisory Council, Family Commission and Special Needs Advisory Council.
The Board elected Mary Ann Wolf as its new chair, and Amy Fowler as vice chair.
