Standard Response Protocols

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools uses a Standard Response Protocol for emergencies that occur at CHCCS schools and offices. We have partnered with the “I Love You Guys" Foundation to develop this guidance and terminology, which is followed by school districts nationwide. Students and staff are training on the protocol throughout the year.

The following terms and definitions will often be communicated to staff, students and families depending on the specific circumstances:

Hold

Hold: The protocol used when hallways need to be kept clear. It is followed by the directive: “In your Room or Area.”

Secure

Secure: The protocol used to safeguard people within the building. It is followed by the directive: “Get inside. Lock outside doors.”

Lockdown

Lockdown: The protocol used to secure individual rooms and keep occupants quiet and in place. It is followed by the directive: “Locks, Lights, Out of Sight.”

Evacuate

Evacuate: The protocol used to move people from one location to a different location in or out of the building. It may be followed by a specific location.

Shelter

Shelter: The protocol for group and self-protection during a hazard, such as a weather emergency.
