Announcement from Superintendent Dr. Nyah Hamlett

February 4, 2025

Dear CHCCS students, families and community members,

It is with deep gratitude and heartfelt reflection that I share this personal and professional announcement: Effective at the end of the current school year, I will be completing my service as superintendent of Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. This was an incredibly difficult decision, one that was ultimately driven by my unwavering commitment to prioritizing the well-being and success of my children and family.

As I prepare to make way for the next leader, I feel deeply grateful for the opportunity and partnership with our Board, along with our team of amazing, dedicated and talented school and district staff. Over the past four years, we’ve worked together to cultivate a safe, affirming and joyful learning environment that values the unique backgrounds and cultures that make our community so beautifully diverse.

As for me and my next steps, there will be another time and place for that. Today is about gratitude. I am grateful for the honor of leading our work and serving this community for the past four years. Throughout my tenure, I’ve strived to provide leadership by guiding our educators and leaders toward collective goals, fostering a culture of care and continuous improvement. The path we have charted together will continue to guide CHCCS toward a promising future.

In the coming weeks, I know that our Board of Education will announce a process for selecting the next superintendent. Rest assured, over the next several months I will still be right here, committed to supporting a seamless transition.

Sincerely,

Nyah D. Hamlett, Ed. D.
Superintendent
