Superintendent
Dr. Rodney Trice
Dr. Rodney N. Trice is the 28th Superintendent of Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, bringing nearly 30 years of experience in local and state educational leadership. Appointed in June 2025, he is known for his strong commitment to student success, meaningful relationships with staff and families, and deep community engagement. A Chapel Hill resident since 2007, Trice views his role as superintendent as a way to give back to the community that has shaped both his family and his career.
Dr. Trice has been widely recognized for his leadership in equity, innovation, and instructional excellence. His honors include the 2025 Dr. Samuel Houston Jr. Leadership Award from the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association, the 2024 Dr. Frances Jones Trailblazer Award from the North Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the 2020 Distinguished Leadership Alumni Award from the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education. He returned to CHCCS in 2021 as Chief Equity and Engagement Officer and was promoted to Deputy Superintendent in 2022, following seven years as Assistant Superintendent for Equity Affairs in the Wake County Public School System. Altogether, he has served CHCCS in leadership roles for more than 12 years.
Dr. Trice earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Detroit Mercy, and a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Morehouse College. Inspired by parents who were both classroom teachers, he holds a deep respect for educators and public education. He and his wife, Kenya, live in Chapel Hill and are the parents of two daughters. Outside of work, he enjoys photography, gardening, and cheering on the Detroit Lions.
