English Language Arts Teacher Jessie Grinnell Named 2025-26 Teacher of the Year
Chapel Hill, N.C. May 9, 2025 – Jessie Grinnell of C & L McDougle Middle School was named the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) Teacher of the Year at its annual Recognition Celebration on May 8.

This is Grinnell’s second time being named the district’s Teacher of the Year, having also received the honor in 2016-17 while teaching at Culbreth Middle School. Grinnell is the first person to be named CHCCS District Teacher of the Year more than once.
In an impromptu acceptance speech, Ms. Grinnell said, “My mission here is to tell teachers that sometimes it gets really hard and sometimes you get down. But if you stop, and you take a breath, and you start saying yes to the things that bring you joy, and reaching out to the people who love you…you can make it far for yourself, and for your students, and for your school and families and everyone who loves you.”
Grinnell is an English Language Arts teacher with 13 years of teaching experience. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She serves on the district’s Instructional Planning Team and the Science of Reading for Secondary Teachers Implementation Team. In previous years, Grinnell received the Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate Excellence in Equitable Teaching Award and held the Neil Pedersen Teachers First Chair for Excellence in Classroom Technology.
Grinnell received a $1,000 check from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation (PSF).
Two Honor Teachers (District Teacher of the Year finalists) were also recognized on Thursday. They are:

The Mary Scroggs Award for Excellence in Providing Support Services recognizes a classified (hourly) staff member from each school and several central services departments. This year Jennifer Dykes, a teacher assistant at Ephesus Elementary was named the award recipient. Dykes received a $1,000 check.

Alicia Curtis of East Chapel Hill High was recognized as the district's Assistant Principal of the Year.
Katy Cobb, director of compensation and compliance, Human Resources Division, received the Award for Excellence in District Administration.
Rachel Etheridge of Ephesus Elementary was the recipient of the Jeanette Blackwell Mentor Teacher Award.
Isabelle Trew of Scroggs Elementary received the PSF Promising New Teacher Award.
Jill Shatterly of FPG Bilingüe Elementary was awarded the Award for Excellence in Teaching Multi-Language Learners.
Kathryn Murchison of Chapel Hill High and Bill Vincent of East Chapel Hill High were awarded the Margaret Kepner Distinguished Service Award.
The EC Support Staff Award was given to Leanne Parr of Smith Middle.
The Instructional Support Award was given to Emily Moorman of Carrboro Elementary.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Association of Educators (CHCAE) presented two awards this year to CHCAE members. Molly Brooks of Carrboro High received the Courageous Educator Award and Kimberly Manning of East Chapel Hill High was the recipient of the Consummate Professional Award.
The Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate (BRMA) program presented the Excellence in Equity Award to Kimberly Manning from East Chapel Hill High. This award is selected by the students in BRMA.
Representatives of PSF were on hand to present both new and renewing Teaching Chairs. New Chairs are:
- Melissa Graham of Culbreth Middle is the Mary U. Andrews Chair for Excellence in Teaching Literacy
- Rebecca Adcock of East Chapel Hill High is the Elmo’s Diner Chair for Excellence in Teaching High School Math or Science
- Eimy Rivas Plata of Phillips Middle is the Kim Hoke Chair for Excellence in Teaching Exceptional Children
- Toni Jeter of Northside Elementary is the Zora Rashkis Teaching Chair for Promising New Elementary School Teacher
- Kelly Fox of Phillips Middle is the Zora Rashkis Teaching Chair for Excellence in Teaching Middle School Language Arts or Social Studies

Stefanie Hanne of Phillips Middle is the Mel and Zora Rashkis Chair for Excellence in Teaching Healthful Living and Physical Education. Laura Harris of Rashkis Elementary is the Sockwell Chair for Excellence in Teaching in the Primary Grades (Pre-K-2). William Schrader of Chapel Hill High is the Bernadine Sullivan Chair for Excellence in Teaching High School English or Social Studies. Sheila Fleming of Scroggs Elementary is the PSF/PTSA Chair for Excellence in Teaching Cultural Arts. Susan Meyer of Culbreth Middle is the Zora Rashkis Teaching Chair for Excellence in Teaching World Language. The annual Recognition Celebration is hosted in collaboration with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation (PSF), which partnered with Pinnacle Financial Partners and the Rotary Club of Chapel Hill.
