Pre-K Teacher LaThanya Campbell Named 2026-27 Teacher of the Year 

Ms. Campbell is a Pre-Kindergarten teacher with 27 years of teaching experience. She joined CHCCS in 2021 and serves on the district’s Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory Council.

“As a Pre-K teacher, you have the power to make children love school or hate school,” Campbell said when asked about what inspires her to teach. “To mold them into lifelong learners and someone who wants to learn is my driving force every day. Knowing that every day I am teaching and showing love to future generations gives me a sense of pride. Helping a child overcome a challenge or learn something new gives me confidence in my teaching journey.”

Campbell received a $1,000 check from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation (PSF).

Two Honor Teachers (District Teacher of the Year finalists) were also recognized on Thursday. They are:

• Veena Anglin, social studies teacher, Chapel Hill High

• Robert Wooten, sixth grade English language arts teacher, Phillips Middle

They each received a $500 check from PSF.

The Mary Scroggs Award for Excellence in Providing Support Services recognizes a classified (hourly) staff member from each school and several Central Office departments. This year Pamela Tedder, a secretary at East Chapel Hill High was named the award recipient. Tedder received a $1,000 check.

• Jennifer Williams-Stark, School Social Worker of the Year, Northside Elementary

Additional staff awards, which had been previously announced, were also formally presented at the event.

Kirtisha Jones of McDougle Elementary was recognized as the district's Principal of the Year. 

Candace Spinks of Ephesus Elementary was recognized as the district's Assistant Principal of the Year.

Tim MacArthur, director of student information and reporting, Instructional Services, Equity and Engagement Division, received the Award for Excellence in District Administration.

Jaslin Dais of McDougle Elementary was the recipient of the Jeanette Blackwell Mentor Teacher Award. 

Mayra Menjivar of Carrboro Elementary received the PSF Promising New Teacher Award. 

Jing Li of Glenwood Elementary was awarded the Award for Excellence in Teaching Multi-Language Learners.

Shawna Catlett of Ephesus Elementary and Whitney Maxwell of Morris Grove Elementary were awarded the Margaret Kepner Distinguished Service Award.

The EC Support Staff Award was given to Jennifer DiGiovanna of Carrboro Elementary. 

The Instructional Support Award was given to Catherine Sweat of McDougle Middle.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Association of Educators (CHCAE) presented two awards this year to CHCAE members. Sally Merryman of Smith Middle received the Courageous Educator Award and Corey Waters of Chapel Hill High was the recipient of the Consummate Professional Award.

The Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate (BRMA) program presented the Excellence in Equity Award to Christopher Sager from Chapel Hill High.  This award is selected by the students in BRMA.

Representatives of PSF were on hand to present both new and renewing Teaching Chairs. New Chairs are:

• Morgan Hogan of Culbreth Middle is the GlaxoSmithKline Chair for Excellence in Teaching Middle School Science or Math
• Rody Huertas of FPG Bilingüe Elementary is the PSF Chair for Excellence in Teaching Cultural Arts
• Angela Kileff Hill of Carrboro High is the Zora Rashkis Teaching Chair for Excellence in Teaching World Language
• Natalie Faircloth of McDougle Elementary is the Sockwell Chair for Excellence in Teaching in the Primary Grades (Pre-K to 2)
• Emma Dove of Chapel Hill High is the Burton Stuart Chair for Promising New Teachers of Secondary Math or Science
• Kathryn Edelstein of East Chapel Hill High is the Bernadine Sullivan Chair for Excellence in Teaching High School English or Social Studies

Eimy Rivas Plata of Phillips Middle is the Kim Hoke Chair for Excellence in Teaching Exceptional Children. Patricia Berge of East Chapel Hill High is the Neil Pedersen Teachers First Chair for Excellence in Classroom Technology. Stefanie Hanne of Phillips Middle is the Mel and Zora Rashkis Chair for Excellence in Teaching Healthful Living and Physical Education. Kelly Fox of Phillips Middle is the Zora Rashkis Teaching Chair for Excellence in Teaching Middle School Language Arts or Social Studies. Toni Jeter of Northside Elementary is the Zora Rashkis Teaching Chair for Promising New Elementary School Teacher. Ashley Quick-Hooker of Northside Elementary is the Upper Elementary Chair for Excellence in Teaching Innovation.

Twelve educators were recognized for earning their National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification. The annual Recognition Celebration is hosted in collaboration with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation (PSF), which partnered with Pinnacle Financial Partners and the Rotary Club of Chapel Hill. The collective generosity of the many donors who gave to PSF’s Love and Roses event in February helped fund many of these monetary awards.
