Frequently Asked Questions related to CHCCS transportation
When will I know my student's bus information?
Bus stop information is typically communicated the week prior to the first day of school. This occurs in the Infinite Campus parent portal, as well as through email.
- Elementary bus stops may be up to .3 (one-third) of a mile from the closest accessible location of bus travel.
- Middle and high school bus stops may be up to .5 (one-half) of a mile from the closest accessible location of bus travel.
Who is authorized to use school bus transportation?
- Children who reside one and a half or more miles from their school of assignment.
- Children with special needs, when required by the IEP as a related service. These children may ride a regular bus or, if required, a bus with an monitor.
- Children who reside in a hazardous area due to local traffic or street conditions that would put them at risk of injury if they were to walk to school. Examples include four lane streets or major traffic arteries (not residential streets) with no traffic controls or no crossing guards in the case of elementary students, railroad tracks, etc.
How are the locations of bus stops determined?
- We prefer to create stops that can serve a group/cluster of students while still adhering to the above guidelines.
What is the maximum distance a student can walk to a bus stop allowed by law?
- State law and CHCCS policy state that 1.5 miles is the maximum allowable walking distance.
My student is eligible for school bus transportation. How do I get a bus stop assigned?
- Contact your school’s data manager to request bus transportation. A directory of data managers is posted here.
- After that, the data manager will coordinate with our Transportation team to get a bus stop assigned. It is not necessary for you to call or email the Transportation department directly.
- Note for new students/families: If a new student is registered for school by mid-August, transportation will be assigned for the first day of school. If a new student is registered for school in late August or early September, please allow up to two weeks for a stop to be assigned. After mid-September, stops are assigned on a case-by-case basis.
Will the bus leave the stop without my child if she/he is not waiting at the bus stop location?
- Yes, the student(s) must be waiting at their stop.
Recent history:
- Please be reminded that student bus stops started changing in 2023-24 and beyond in order to provide safe, efficient and on-time transportation for all eligible students. Consolidated stops were among the Board-approved results of a community conversation that took place back in 2022-23 to address the shortage of bus drivers.
