Career and College Promise
What is Career and College Promise?
CHCCS students can take college courses at Durham Technical Community College, Alamance Community College, or other NC Community Colleges and earn BOTH High School and College credit with free tuition.
See NCDPI's CCP website for details about this great opportunity and read more about CCP information for students. Many CCP courses are offered virtually and can be taken while on campus. For classes that are in person, students need to find their own transportation to the college campus that they select to enroll in.
Why CCP?
- Tuition is Free
- Participate in college level courses while still in high school
- It looks good on your college application
- You can earn credits for graduation requirements
- Continue CTE pathways
How does CCP go on my transcript?
All CCP courses are added to your high school transcript. Courses in the University Transfer pathway are weighted like an AP class. CCP CTE courses can have different weights. Check with your school counselor to determine the weight of a CCP CTE class. You can also participate in our pass/fail policy for up to 4 courses (2 per academic year). If you choose the pass/fail option, your numerical grade will still be a part of your college transcript.
Starting classes at a community college means that you will now have a college transcript for the state of North Carolina. All CCP courses are included in the college transcript with their numerical grade.
Can I earn graduation requirements?
High School Course Equivalencies courses are based upon the Universal General Education Transfer Component of the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement and will transfer for equivalency credit. You'll need to check with your School Counselor to verify if the college course satisfies a graduation requirement.
How do I enroll at Durham Tech?
CHCCS has a Durham Tech Liaison who works with our district:
Arielle Beamon
DTCC Career College Promise Liaison
beamona@durhamtech.edu
Schedule a meeting with Ms. Beamon
How do I enroll at other community colleges?
Check their website, if you need help, ask your school counselor or CDC.
FAQ:
Will CCP courses impact NCAA Eligibility?
The NCAA requires students take 16 approved Core Courses. Each high school has a list of approved courses available on the NCAA website. Courses included in the CCP Articulation Agreement will be included in the approved list.
CHCCS registration closes before CCP registration can I still sign up?
Community College registration opens after the high schools finalize theirs. When students register for courses, Durham Tech sends the course registration list to the high schools. The high schools then update PowerSchool with the CCP courses. If you attend a different community college, contact your school counselor to make sure they get the information they need.
Can I take any class?
No, students can only take CCP (College and Career Promise) courses.
Can I drop a class if I don’t like it?
When a student drops a class, it is recorded on their academic record but does not appear on their transcript. Students can request to drop a class within the first 10% of the term. However, they will still be responsible for paying course fees.
The special grade of W is assigned when a student officially withdraws or, in certain cases, is withdrawn by the instructor during the first 60% of the class meeting hours. Students who do not officially withdraw may receive a grade of F2 (Failure due to Excessive Absences after the withdrawal deadline). Students will still be responsible for paying course fees.
Can dropping a class impact my future financial aid?
Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP): Federal and state regulations require that students receiving financial aid maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). To remain eligible for financial aid, students must meet the following minimum guidelines:
- Maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0.
- Earn at least 67% of the total cumulative credit hours attempted.
- Example: If a student has attempted 50 credit hours, they must have earned credit for at least 34 hours.
Are there tutoring services?
Yes, CCP students can take advantage of all tutoring services provided by the community college.
Do I have to choose a Pathway?
Yes, most students enroll in the Associate in Arts pathway.
Can I just take one class this year, or do I have to take more to be Dual Enrolled?
Students can take up to 18 credit hours per semester.
If my class is asynchronous, how do I get help?
All students have a professor, even if the courses are taught asynchronously. The student can reach out to the professor at any time.
If a class is online, are there any required synchronous times?
Yes, the fall schedule will be released within the next month.
Will I have to go to Durham Tech to take tests or finals? If yes, are the times flexible?
For math and science courses, students may need to take finals in person. All other courses are entirely online.
Will I get AP-weighted grades for any class I take, or just certain ones?
All college transfer courses that are three credit hours or more are weighted like AP.
Do I need to get a “C” or better to earn university transfer credit?
Correct. Yes, all classes with a C or better will be accepted by any college in the UNC system. If a student is going to an out-of-state or private school, they should contact that school to see if those courses would transfer.
Is there a list of courses that transfer to the NC university system?
Yes, it covers all 16 UNC schools.
If I have an IEP or 504 plan, will there be any accommodations if I am taking an online course?
Yes, but IEP/504 accommodations do not automatically transfer. Students and parents must contact the college accommodations services.
I understand that tuition is covered, but am I responsible for fees and textbook purchases?
Yes, if you are unable to pay the fees, you can request assistance from CHCCS.
If I cannot attend the Zoom info session, can I still apply?
No, the session is mandatory.
