Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)
What is a Multi-Tiered System of Support?
North Carolina Multi-Tiered System of Support (NC MTSS) is a school improvement framework that encompasses academic, behavioral, social, and emotional instruction and support. NC MTSS employs a systems approach using data-driven problem-solving to maximize growth for all.
What are Tiered Supports?
A Multi-Tiered System of Support organizes instruction and intervention/enrichment into tiers or levels of support:
- Core Instruction (Tier 1 - ALL): All students receive high-quality instruction in academics and clear behavior expectations in the classroom.
- Supplemental Support (Tier 2 - SOME): In addition to Core Instruction, students needing more support or stretch also receive small-group intervention/acceleration and supports. The difference is increased time, smaller groups of students, or narrowed focus of instruction.
- Intensive Support (Tier 3 - FEW): In addition to receiving Core Instruction and Supplemental Support, a student may need more intensive instruction supports based on individual needs. An MTSS problem-solving team analyzes the needs of the individual students and works together to identify appropriate supports for these students.
