McKinney-Vento Act: Homeless Assistance

Emergency Housing Support After Hours and During School Closures

If school offices are closed due to holidays, weekends, inclement weather or after-hours, families who need emergency housing assistance should contact community emergency resources, directly:

  • Dial 2-1-1 to reach United Way's resource line for emergency shelter, housing assistance, food and crisis services.
  • Use the Orange County OC Connect resource database to search for local emergency housing, shelters, and support services.
  • In urgent situations involving immediate danger or homelessness tonight, contact your local emergency shelter or go to the nearest emergency department.
    • IFC HomeStart is a 24-hour emergency shelter for women and families experiencing homelessness. (919) 932-6025
    • Durham Rescue Mission 919-688-9641 ext. 5000

  • If a child or family is in immediate danger, call 911.

When schools reopen, families may also contact their school social worker for ongoing housing and educational assistance.
