My name is Jonathan Woody. If you know anything about me already, you know that I love kids and I love Carrboro Elementary School. I began my career in education as a teacher assistant in WCPSS. From there, I spent fifteen years teaching in private schools. I have taught in a variety of educational settings.....from Trivium-based classical schools all the way to Project-Based Learning schools.
Education is a second career for me. I graduated from Montreat College with a major in Accounting and Economics. Being a CPA simply did not feed my soul. Kids do. Since becoming an educator, I've received three graduate degrees (Theology from Southeastern Seminary, Humanities from Duke University and School Administration from UNC). Did I tell you that I love to learn?
I live in downtown Raleigh with my husband, Ed. He's a national controller for a global finance firm. We live with our five-year old child - an English Golden Retriever named Guinness. He's not a small dog.
I'm a sports fanatic and a huge Duke fan. And since my hubby attended Penn State and UPENN, I also cheer for those two teams. I love to read........everything from physics, young adult literature, theology all the way to historical fiction. My favorite recreational activity is without a doubt camping and hiking. Each summer, I spend a couple of weeks on the Appalachian Trail. I'd love to hike the whole trail one day. Being on a trail in the woods or on the side of a mountain is my safe space.
My name is Jillian La Serna and I am honored to serve as principal at Carrboro Elementary School. I began my career in education as a teacher assistant. I worked as a classroom teacher in various grade levels: kindergarten, fourth, and fifth. I have also had the opportunity to live and teach in Lima, Peru. I completed my undergraduate work and Teacher Preparation Program at California State University, Sacramento. I received my Master of School Administration at UNC-Chapel Hill as a North Carolina Principal Fellow. In 2017, I completed my Doctorate in Educational Leadership at UNC-Chapel Hill, studying effective instructional strategies in dual language programs.
I have had the pleasure of working at Carrboro Elementary for the eight years, one as principal intern, two as assistant principal, and five as principal. My son, Mateo (12) is currently in seventh grade at McDougle Middle School after having attended CES from PreK to 5th grade. My daughter, Micaela (9) is a proud fourth grade Carrboro Cub! My interests outside of school include reading, swimming, traveling, and spending time with my family.
