• International students holding hands circling the world Lisa Albury and Jennifer Roth are the English Language Learner (ELL) Teachers at Mary Scroggs Elementary School. Their job is to provide intensive English instruction, academic support, and cultural orientation to students whose English language proficiency is not yet sufficient to perform at grade level. They also collaborate with classroom teachers to ensure that each ELL student’s academic work is appropriate for his/her English proficiency level.

For students who have beginner-level English proficiency, the program is a “pull-out” model, meaning that the ELL Specialists take the students out of their regular classrooms for lessons of 30 to 60 minutes per day to give them intensive English instruction in small groups. As students’ English proficiency progresses to an intermediate level and they are more able to participate in classroom activities, they remain in their classrooms. Instead, the ELL Teachers join them in their classrooms during part of their academic instruction (“inclusion” model) to help with class work, projects, and other assignments.

The ELL teachers’ work consists of not just helping students, but also their families. If parents need assistance with completing forms or communicating with their children’s teachers, the ELL teachers are available to help. Questions, comments or concerns are always welcome. Please feel free to call or email us and we will respond within 48 hours.
