All volunteers and chaperones must complete a background check just as CHCCS employees do during the hiring process. Exceptions include anyone under the age of 18, current CHCCS students and current CHCCS employees. (CHCCS employees already have current background checks conducted through the Human Resources department.)
The background check application requires a Social Security Number (SSN). If you do not have a SSN, please contact the school. In this case, approval to volunteer will be determined by your school principal.
After finishing your background check, the following screen should appear on your device:
You may click either the blue "Complete" button or the "Return to CHAPEL HILL-CARRBORO SCHOOLS Home Page" link to exit the screen.
You should also receive an email confirming submission of your application. The email will come from <applicantinquiry@bib.com> with the subject line "Secure Volunteer Application Confirmation." You may need to check your spam folder for this email.
If you don't receive either method of confirmation, YOUR BACKGROUND CHECK HAS NOT BEEN SUBMITTED.
You can check the status of your application by creating an account on the Bchex/BIB Applicant Portal. The link to the portal can also be found in the first email you receive from Bchex - A BIB Company.
It is advised that applicants do not use a phone to complete the background check. You may use a phone to scan your ID, but please begin your session on a computer. In addition, the most compatible browsers are Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
If you are still experiencing issues completing the background check, please try these solutions.
Force refresh the page.
On a device running Windows, press Ctrl + F5
On a Mac, press Apple + R or command + R
Clear your cookies.
On any browser, press Ctrl + Shift + Delete. This will allow you to clear your cookies. It will also allow you to clear cached pages and temporary files. This is the ONLY way you can clear your cookies.
Uncheck everything except cookies. If you want to clear the cache too, then leave only cookies and cache checked. If you clear form data, passwords or logins, then all of your saved passwords and pre-filled forms will be erased.
If this does not work, please contact your school to verify that you do not already have an active background check.
CHCCS background checks are valid for two years. You may submit a new application beginning 30 days prior to your expiration date. If you are unsure whether or not your background check has expired, you can check the Bchex/BIB Applicant Portal or contact your school. If you try to submit a new application and you get an error message, you most likely have a current background check on file. Please contact your school to confirm.
Most background checks come back within two or three days. However, if you have lived in certain states or if there is a delay in the court system, background checks can take longer. We recommend submitting a background check at least two weeks prior to volunteering/chaperoning just to be safe.
