CHCCS CARES

Creating Advocates for Relationships and Emotional Safety

Welcome to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools CARES SEL Hub

CHCCS is excited to release this CHCCS CARES website designed to support our community by strengthening advocates for healthy relationships that foster emotional safety within our schools.  At CHCCS we know that students' academic outcomes are entwined with their social and emotional well-being.  Students' ability to experience success in school is linked not only to high quality instruction, but also to their experience of school as a positive, welcoming environment, which is strengthened through healthy relationships with adults and peers.

This website will outline our vision for social and emotional learning (SEL), provide school and community resources, and spotlight successes in creating advocates for relationships and emotional safety.  CHCCS CARES!

Let's Celebrate SEL day!

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Day is an opportunity to collectively spread the word about the importance and impact of social emotional learning. Working together, we can raise awareness for SEL, bring on new SEL stakeholders, demonstrate SEL in action and share SEL best practices! Together, let's continue to foster environments where every student can thrive, emotionally and academically.

Family Alcohol Education Campaign

Family Alcohol Education Campaign-'TALK it OUT' is designed to facilitate productive conversations about alcohol between families and students.

The harmful consequences of underage drinking have long-lasting impacts, but underage drinking is preventable. With your critical help, we can support the health and well-being of our students.

To help you with these important conversations, we are providing some resources and a series of videos that can be found on the CHCCS: Family and Community Engagement website.   These videos are available in English, Karen, Spanish, and Burmese.

Resources for Educators, Families to discuss World crises with students

As we continue to prioritize the social and emotional needs of our students, staff and families in an ever evolving world, we offer these resources to assist with addressing the challenges and complexities of supporting our young people through times of world tragedies. May you find these resources useful in helping our young people  make meaning, cope and navigate their fears of violence and become inspired to feel a sense of hope that together, we can still create a better world, a world full of peace and kindness.

September 15, 2022, our School Support and Wellness Team participated in the Sandy Hook Promise Prevention Program Training with Jim Wise, representative from Sandy Hook Promise.  The day was full of learning about resources to facilitate conversations on "teaching empathy and empowering students to end social isolation" by following these three easy steps" See Someone Alone + Reach Out= Start with Hello.  Below is an example how McDougle Middle School among many at Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools displayed their "Start with Hello" Week. Please feel free to use/share these resources linked here throughout the school year to promote socially affirming learning communities across the district

What is SEL?

SEL Resources

Spotlight on SEL

Our district strives to build a culture based on high and clear expectations, and accountability for all. CHCCS staff make a commitment to take responsibility for the development of all students, and to teach and model the skills, behaviors, and mindsets we seek to cultivate in our students.  That commitment includes a focus on social and emotional learning (SEL) to build a healthy school culture and facilitate student success.

This video, produced by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), provides an introduction to SEL. According to CASEL, SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

How are we doing?

This site will continue to be developed and refined as we add additional resources, improve accessibility, and incorporate user feedback like yours!
