A "printable calendar" version will be available in the coming weeks.
Update March 21: The final draft of the Calendar Committee's 2026-27 School Year Calendar was set for approval at the March 20 Board of Education meeting, but it has been rescheduled for approval at the April 10 meeting. The latest proposals include:
- Remove two proposed half days for professional learning on October 19, 2026, and March 19, 2027
- Shorten Quarter 2 to 41 days and lengthen Quarter 3 to 45 days
- Move a teacher workday on September 11, 2026, (originally intended to be in observance of Rosh Hashanah which does not begin until sundown that day) and instead place it on April 22, 2027, in observance of Passover.
Update Feb. 21: The Calendar Committee presented its proposed 2026-27 School Year Calendar at the Feb. 20 Board of Education meeting.
- The first day of school for grades K-12 would be Monday, Aug. 24, 2026.
- Students would have a full week off for Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break for students would be Dec. 21, 2026 to Jan. 4, 2027.
- Spring Break would be March 29, 2027 to April 2, 2027.
- The last day of school would be Friday, June 11, 2027.
Staff and families were invited to complete a survey (Jan. 23-Feb. 7) to provide calendar input. The calendar survey had 1,329 responses, with 67% from families (click here to review the survey results in greater detail.)
- There will not be an additional survey because staff and family input was collected at the beginning of the process. However, please send your questions or feedback to Dr. Andre' Stewart, chief operations officer, at adstewart@chccs.k12.nc.us
When applicable, religious and cultural observances from prior calendars have been retained in the 2026-27 proposal.
Reminder: According to North Carolina law, public schools can start no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26 and end no later than the Friday closest to June 11. The calendar must include 185 days or 1,025 hours for students. CHCCS currently follows the 1,025 instructional hour requirement for students to be in school, instead of the 185 day requirement. Teachers must work for 215 days.
You can see the full list of calendar requirements at this link: NC SCHOOL CALENDAR LAW.
What’s noteworthy about these calendars?
When applicable, CHCCS strives to observe holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Diwali, the Lunar New Year and Eid al-Fitr through the strategic placement of a limited number of Teacher Workdays (no school for students.) Additional holidays are observed when students have full weeks off such as Thanksgiving week, Winter Break and Spring Break. Unfortunately, public school districts are unable to observe every holiday and still meet minimum instructional-hours requirements for students given the constraints of North Carolina school calendar laws.
New Look for Printable Calendars: To offer a better understanding of CHCCS calendars, the printable calendars above now include a back page, which explains Teacher Workdays, Inclement Weather Days, Holidays and Observances, as well as North Carolina Calendar Law. The back page also lists Teacher Workdays and holidays and, where applicable, the cultural or religious reasons CHCCS chose these days to be non-student days.
The 2024-25 and 2025-26 calendars were approved by the Board of Education on February 15, 2024.
