2026-27 School Year Calendar

Basics for the approved 2026-27 School Year Calendar (printable calendar):

Athletics begin: Thursday, July 29, 2026
Start Day for Students (grades K-12): Monday, August 24, 2026
- Note: The Start Day is per NC state calendar law and is two weeks prior to Labor Day
Thanksgiving Break: Monday, Nov. 23-Friday, Nov. 27, 2026 (a full week off for students, three optional workdays for staff)
Winter Break: Monday, Dec. 21, 2026-Friday, Jan. 1, 2027
Spring Break: Monday, March 29-Friday, April 2, 2027
End Day for Students: Friday, June 11, 2027 (full day, no early dismissal)

2027-28 School Year Calendar

At its April 16, 2026 Meeting, the Board of Education approved the 2027-28 School Year Calendar. Basics for the approved 2027-28 School Year Calendar (printable calendar available soon):

Start Day for Students (grades K-12): Monday, August 23, 2027
- Note: The Start Day is per NC state calendar law and is two weeks prior to Labor Day
Thanksgiving Break: Monday, Nov. 22-Friday, Nov. 26, 2027 (a full week off for students, three optional workdays for staff)
Winter Break: Monday, Dec. 20-Friday, Dec. 31, 2027
Spring Break: Monday, April 10-Friday, April 14, 2028
End Day for Students: Thursday, June 8, 2028 (full day, no early dismissal)

Reminder: According to North Carolina law, public schools can start no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26 and end no later than the Friday closest to June 11. The calendar must include 185 days or 1,025 hours for students. CHCCS currently follows the 1,025 instructional hour requirement for students to be in school, instead of the 185 day requirement. Teachers must work for 215 days.

What’s noteworthy about these calendars?

When applicable, CHCCS strives to observe holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Diwali, the Lunar New Year and Eid al-Fitr through the strategic placement of a limited number of Teacher Workdays (no school for students.) Additional holidays are observed when students have full weeks off such as Thanksgiving week, Winter Break and Spring Break. Unfortunately, public school districts are unable to observe every holiday and still meet minimum instructional-hours requirements for students given the constraints of North Carolina school calendar laws.

New Look for Printable Calendars: To offer a better understanding of CHCCS calendars, the printable calendars above now include a back page, which explains Teacher Workdays, Inclement Weather Days, Holidays and Observances, as well as North Carolina Calendar Law. The back page also lists Teacher Workdays and holidays and, where applicable, the cultural or religious reasons CHCCS chose these days to be non-student days.
