Advancement by Demonstrated Mastery (ADM) & Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) Chapel Hill–Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) offers two opportunities for students with exceptional academic skills to advance in coursework or earn high school credit without taking a course:

Both options follow a two-phase assessment process outlined below.


Family & Student Informational Webinar

CHCCS will host a family information webinar to explain ADM and CDM and answer questions. The webinar will be available in English and Spanish.

Advancement by Demonstrated Mastery (ADM)

  • The deadline for ADM has been extended for 5th graders until Friday, March 6th. 

  • Who is eligible: 5th grade elementary students and 6th & 7th grade Middle school students with exceptionally strong math skills.

  • Purpose: Allows students to advance to the next middle school math course while demonstrating they understand the math content that is being skipped.

  • Credit earned: No course credit is awarded for the skipped course.

  • Courses: Middle school mathematics only

  • Resource: this document outlines which standards are covered in each ADM assessment.

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM)

  • Who is eligible: Students with exceptionally strong knowledge and skills in a high school course.

  • Purpose: Allows students to earn high school credit and advance to the next course level.

  • Courses: High school courses only

The application for ADM and CDM will be open:

The deadline for ADM has been extended for 5th graders until Friday, March 6th.

The application link will be shared in school weekly communications.

Schools will schedule and administer all assessments.

CDM Non-State Assessments include:

  • STAMP World Language Assessments

  • Math 2, Math 4

  • English 1, English 3, English 4

  • CTE Computer Skills

  • All Arts, Social Studies, and Science courses

ADM Non-State Assessments include:

  • Advanced Math 6

  • Advanced Math 7

  • Math 8

  • All applicable CTE courses

CHCCS Middle School student cdm choices 
The purpose of this document is to assist families and schools in understanding eligibility for accessing the Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) process. The only courses eligible in this process are high school courses which must be completed in the appropriate sequence. For example, a student must be enrolled in Math 1 before applying to CDM Math 2.  Additionally, middle school students may not apply to CDM any high school course, other than a math or world language course, until their 8th grade year. Please note the exception of Career and Technical Education courses below.  Furthermore, for information on our World and Dual Language Pathways, please refer to this document: CHCCS Dual & World Language Pathways.

Information for Phase 1 and Phase 2 ASSESSMENTS 

Phase 1 & Phase 2 CDM Assessment Descriptions 

  • Contains a breakdown of each assessment including number of questions and item type(s)

Phase 1- Students must achieve a Level V on state assessments or a 90% on local assessments. 

* Arts are locally developed and a portfolio Pathway is recommended. 

Phase 2 Assessments: All are locally developed performance assessments and are outlined here.

 Re-testing is not permitted for any assessment.
