Work-based learning (WBL) is an educational strategy that provides students with real-life work experiences where they can apply academic and technical skills and develop employability skills. The concept of work-based learning is an integral part of the Career and Technical Education system that provides a competitive advantage for students. Work-based learning experiences occur in a work setting, and typically are scheduled during the first or the last period of the day.

Summer Career Academy

Skilled Trades Pre Apprenticeship with paid on-the-job learning

CHCCS has partnered with Orange County Schools, Durham Technical Community College, Home Builders Association, and local businesses to offer a pre-apprenticeship for 11th and 12th graders interested in a Career in the Construction Skilled Trades. Local businesses are hiring our students for construction positions like plumbing, carpentry, electrical trades, maintenance, etc.  (see interest survey link below).    This 8 week course is offered over the summer. Students will be paid a “learning wage” of $12 +/hour for their work and they will also earn free industry recognized credentials; OSHA Construction, CPR and more. Students that complete the program will receive a high school course credit for pre-apprenticeship and a community college waiver to further their postsecondary education and training.

 

Auto Services CTE Internship with Chapel Hill Tire paid on-the-job learning

 

This 8 week course is offered over the summer. Students train for 3 day at Chapel Hill High School in their Auto Service Lab with our Auto Service Instructor then they are placed at various Chapel Hill Tire locations to learn, work and earn. Students will be paid a “learning wage” of $12 +/hour for their work and they will also earn free industry recognized credential: OSHA Auto Services. Student will receive a high school course credit for CTE Internship.

 

Students must apply for our Summer Careers Academy program, be interviewed and selected to participate in this program. Our Summer Careers Academy student application opens in October.

Build Our Future (Skilled Trades Pre-Apprenticeship Program)

• Students will earn a high school credit for successful completion of the program. ( 1 credit for pre-apprenticeship)
• Students will earn industry credentials (NCCER, OSHA 10 Construction, and their CPR certification)

Drive our Future (Auto Services CTE Internship Program)

• Students will earn a high school credit for successful completion of the program. ( 1 credit for CTE Internship)
• Students will earn an industry credential; OSHA 10 Auto Services.
