Work-based learning (WBL) is an educational strategy that provides students with real-life work experiences where they can apply academic and technical skills and develop employability skills. The concept of work-based learning is an integral part of the Career and Technical Education system that provides a competitive advantage for students. Work-based learning experiences occur in a work setting, and typically are scheduled during the first or the last period of the day.

In this class, you will team up with students from other Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools to solve real problems for real organizations and businesses. Your experience will feature: authentic challenges from local community partners, collaboration with diverse teams, and opportunities for self-direction. District C coaches (teachers) will empower you and your teammates to own and manage your work -- including when to shift gears, when to seek guidance, and how best to learn important content that informs your problem solving effort. Throughout this course, you will develop the mindsets and tools needed for the work of the future.
Summer Career Academy
IC002X0 Construction Core with paid on-the-job learning 3 days a week
CHCCS has partnered with Orange County Schools, Durham Technical Community College, Home Builders Association, and local businesses to offer a pre-apprenticeship for 11th and 12th graders interested in a construction career. CHCCS is currently registering as an apprenticeship site to hire students interested in HVAC as part of this program along with other local businesses for additional construction positions like plumbing, carpentry, etc (see interest survey link below). The course will be offered 2 days a week and on-the-job 3 days a week. Students will be paid a “learning wage” of $12/hour for their work experience.
The fundamental summer course covers the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Core certification modules required for all of the NCCER curriculum-area programs, and an additional Green module. The course content includes: basic safety, introduction to construction math, introduction to hand tools, introduction to power tools, introduction to construction drawings - blueprints, material handling, basic communication skills, and basic employability skills. “Your Role in the Green Environment” is an additional Green module and is "Supplemental. If the decision is made to teach this model, its content will provide students with instruction in the green environment, green construction practices, and green building rating systems, and will help students better understand their personal impacts on the environment and make them more aware of how to reduce their carbon footprint. Work-based learning will be included in this course. * Due to potentially hazardous equipment, a maximum enrollment of 20 is recommended
Note: Proof of Learning (POL) is a credential: NCCER - Construction Core.
MUST PASS, with 70 or higher, ALL MODULES (see tethered column) on NC Course Blueprint
