SUBSTITUTE TEACHER HIRING PROCESS
Substitute teachers are employed by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools on an as-needed basis to fill in for absent classroom teachers and selected teacher assistants. In order to be a substitute teacher, an individual must be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or its equivalency (GED) and have at least 60 college credit hours.
Also, in order to remain on the active substitute list, individuals must substitute a minimum of ten times per school year. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the individual being inactivated.
Please be aware that it may take up to six weeks before your name is added to our approved substitute teacher list. Please take this into consideration before applying.
To begin the Substitute application process, please complete the following steps:
Visit www.chccs.org, click on careers, and then click on Substitute under the Vacancies. Complete the online application. Please be sure to apply for the Substitute Teacher position (JobID 755).
Email Zaneta Brown, Leave and Substitutes Specialist, at email@example.com. In the subject line type “Substitute Application”. Indicate your potential start date in the email.
Your completed application and references will then be reviewed and a background check will be completed.
If approved, your information will be submitted to the Board of Education for approval at its next regular meeting. You will then receive another email confirming the date to attend the next Substitute Orientation session. Upon completion, you will be given login credentials to our automated Absence Management System, AESOP.
NOTE: Substitute teachers play an important role in the everyday operation of the local school. It is extremely important that the job responsibilities are understood and followed. Because substitute teachers may serve in many schools with limited ability for consistent supervision, a complaint from any school about the performance of a substitute teacher may result in excluding that substitute from the schools' substitute teacher list and/or removing that substitute from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools' approved substitute teacher list.
Substitute Teacher Pay is $111.00 per day for substitutes holding a teaching license. Approved substitutes not holding a teaching license are paid $90.00 per day. You pay check is automatically direct deposited into your bank account at the end of the month.
