About YLI

  • Blue Ribbon Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) Overview

Blue Ribbon Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) impacts approximately 80 students through our programs.  Students are encouraged to attend the summer youth leadership camp to acquire the skills they need to be student advocates and leaders.  During the year, YLI holds club meetings at each school twice a month during lunch. Each month, students engage in a local service-learning project where they can make a difference by impacting their community.  Service-learning projects allow students to implement the principles of I-CAR (taught during summer camp), Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Responsibility. Students who attend YLI meetings on a regular basis and complete 10 hours of YLI service-learning projects are eligible for the annual alternative spring break.  Alternative spring breaks provide students with an opportunity to serve beyond North Carolina. Alternative spring break includes service-learning opportunities, college tours, cultural enrichment and loads of fun with friends from each high school.

    Student Responsibility

Students are encouraged to embrace the principles of YLI, Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, and Responsibility.  Students are required to attend a minimum of 10 YLI club meetings during lunch and complete 10 hours of YLI Service-learning projects to be eligible for the alternative spring break trip.

Encourage and support students in their leadership development. Blue Ribbon encourages parents to participate, as their schedules permit, on college tours and service-learning projects.

    YLI Camp

Each summer Blue Ribbon hosts a weekend residential summer leadership camp for rising 9 – 12th graders at Camp New Hope.  Our camp focuses on leadership development, student voice, and advocacy through experiential learning. We focus on team building through our foundational principles: vision, communication, empowerment, advocacy, student voice, and implementation.  The camp is held two weekends during the summer.
