9th-10th Grade Counselor

Matt Harkey joins Carrboro HS as a school counselor after nearly ten years in that role at Northern HS in neighboring Durham. Matt grew up in Gastonia, NC before matriculating at UNC-Chapel Hill. There, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. He also attended Carolina’s School Counseling graduate program, pursuing his passion for working with young people during this uniquely formative period of their lives. He lives in the area with his fiancée and loves sports, the outdoors, and reading. Matt is thrilled to join the Carrboro team and looks forward to accomplishing a lot in partnership with the students, families, and staff of this community.

Dr. Ashley Freuler

11th Grade Counselor

Ashley Freuler brings a wealth of experience in working with students and families in various clinical and school settings as both a mental health and school counselor. Ashley has most recently served as Adjunct Faculty at UNC while teaching graduate level courses to students in the Occupational Therapy department. Ashley earned her Doctorate from UNC Chapel Hill while working on various programs of research focusing on Autism Spectrum Disorders. She earned a B.S. in Sociology from the University of Georgia, an M.S. in Counseling from Mercer University, and also served as a graduate teaching assistant at Kansas State University's Early Childhood Center while completing graduate coursework in Special Education. Ashley has completed all required coursework in preparation for a School Counseling License through The University of Georgia's Educational Specialsit Program with a School Counseling Endorsement, and looks forward to full NC Licensure at the end of her first year at CHS. Ashley has published research in national and international peer-reviewed journals. She is passionate about implementing and supporting social justice practices in schools and working collaboratively to optimally support student needs. She lives on a homestead in Pittsboro with her husband, three boys, and menagerie of animals.

12th Grade Counselor

Ken Lathan is entering his 3rd year as counselor and Head Football Coach at Carrboro HS. He has over 13 years of experience in both counseling and coaching with stops in South Carolina, Georgia, and now North Carolina. Ken is a graduate of both the University of South Carolina-Columbia (Business Administration) and South Carolina State University (M.Ed Counseling). He has a passion for helping young people reach their fullest potential. He absolutely loves football, (Go Gamecocks and Bulldogs), and interacting with students. Coach Lathan is married to his beautiful wife, Bolu Abe-Lathan and has a beautiful daughter, Kendyl-Gray. Coach Lathan will have appointments scheduled throughout the school day, but due to coaching duties, he will see his last appointment at 4pm during the fall semester.
