Driver Ed Overview
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools offers Driver Education to its high school students through a private contractor, the Jordan Driving School of the Carolinas (JDS Carolinas).Students take Driver Ed classes during after-school hours, on Saturdays, over holiday breaks, and during the Summer. These classes are offered one-time, free-of-charge for eligible students residing in the school district, including home-schooled and charter school students. The course includes 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and an eye test.
Eligibility for Driver EducationDriver Education is offered in grades 9-12.Students must be 14-1/2 years old to take the Driver Education Course.CHCCS and other 9-12 grade students residing in the district are eligible to enroll in Driver Education. This includes charter school and home-schooled students.Note: There are no academic requirements to take the Driver Education course, however, there are academic requirements issued by the State of North Carolina that make one eligible to obtain a permit or license after completing the course.
