English as a Second Language
-
Currently, there are nearly 1,300 English Language Learners (ELLs) enrolled in the Chapel Hill- Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS). English Language Learners are students still working towards proficiency in English, as measured by listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
CHCCS is proud to offer two methods for meeting the specific educational needs of these students. English as Second Language (ESL) programs are offered at every school in our district. We also offer a Dual Language program at Frank Porter Graham Elementary (Spanish/English), limited Dual Language classes at Carrboro Elementary (Spanish/English), and Glenwood Elementary (Mandarin Chinese/English). Visit the Dual Language office for more information.
In addition to meeting the educational needs of our English Language Learners, CHCCS, its faculty, and staff also strive to effectively communicate with the parents and guardians of our ELLs, no matter what language they speak. We achieve this through use of staff and contract translators/interpreters, bilingual employees throughout the district, and use of online technologies.Contact Us
