DUE TO A REVISION OF BOARD POLICY 3460, THE SERVICE LEARNING GRADUATION REQUIREMENT HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED FOR ALL SENIORS GRADUATING IN JUNE 2022 AND FOR FUTURE SENIORS.

In February 2022, the CHCCS Board of Education approved a revision to Policy 3460: Graduation Requirements that removes the requirement for completion of 25 hours of service-learning hours. Service Learning is no longer required in any capacity. However, the district still strongly encourages students to engage in Service Learning as often as possible.

This decision to eliminate the graduation requirement of Service Learning followed a full review of the program in order to increase equitable outcomes for all students. After discussions occurred with input from high school principals and the Curriculum Management Team, all agreed the Service Learning Program, as a graduation requirement, is a barrier to students receiving their high school diploma.

The goal is to continue supporting Service Learning, now as an extra-curricular program embedded within our instructional program in order to cultivate and sustain a sense of caring for others and the wider community.

Students graduating with 100 service learning hours completed with two or more organizations will continue to be recognized at graduation.

The existing guidelines will remain in place for approval of volunteer organizations.  Approved organizations must have a 501(c)3 tax status or be a school, retirement home, or other program approved entity.
