What laws must CHCCS follow in drafting a school calendar?
The NC General Assembly voted in 2004 to mandate that all public schools can start no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26 and end no later than the Friday closest to June 11. This bears repeating frequently, because it’s important to understand how little flexibility is available for setting calendar days for students. For example, in the upcoming 2022-23 school year, these will be the start and end dates for students:

• Start Day for Students: August 29, 2022
• End Day for Students: June 9, 2023

The calendar must include 185 days or 1,025 hours for students. CHCCS currently follows the 1,025 instructional hour requirement for students to be in school, instead of the 185 day requirement. How are the draft calendars created?
The development process for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years began with the work of a CHCCS Calendar Committee which has approximately 50 members. Those members include PTA representatives from elementary, middle and high schools, teachers, certified and classified staff as well as community members. The committee met regularly during the fall and early winter. Additionally, members sought feedback from their school or community-based peers, colleagues and constituents as the drafts were developed, in order to ensure many ideas, questions and concerns could be addressed.

What else do we consider when proposing these calendars?
In order to assist CHCCS employees and families with long-term planning, the current calendar creation effort involves drafting calendars two school years in advance. Additionally, to the greatest extent possible, CHCCS is mindful of religious and cultural observances when planning a school calendar, while also remaining compliant with NC school calendar law.
