Principal

Hello!  I am excited to be the Principal here at Smith Middle School.  I have over twenty years in education as a teacher, an assistant principal, principal, and college instructor.  I received my Bachelors in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, my MS in English Education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, my MSA in School Administration from UNCG, and my Ed.D in Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations from UNCG as well.  I have also held several director roles including Federal Programs and Exceptional Children.  I have spent my career in education serving students and families from all walks of life to ensure that equitable access to education is available to everyone.  What we do as educators can determine the trajectory of a child's life and future.  Therefore, I take my role as a school leader and the work we do here at Smith very seriously.  I love the beach, reading just about anything, and enjoying the tunes of a good cover band.  I am here for you, so please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Assistant Principal

I began my career in education as a secondary school counselor in 1998.  As such, the forging of positive relationships with students, parents, and staff is a top priority for me.  In 2010, I transitioned into school leadership because I wished to be an active agent of school reform and maximized potential for all students.  After serving as its Principal Intern in 2011-2012, I returned to Smith Middle School in July 2018 as Assistant Principal after serving Carrboro High School in the same capacity from 2012-2018. I have actually spent time as an educator at all three levels in four NC school districts, and even as a private consultant specializing in the development of high school transition programs.  I have a B.A. in Political Science from UNC-Greensboro, a Masters of Counselor Education from NC State, and a Masters of School Administration from UNC Chapel Hill. More recently, I earned my Ed.D. in Educational Leadership at UNC Chapel Hill in 2017 after successfully defending my dissertation, the focus of which was equity as evidenced through high school scheduling and teacher assignment practices.  I am also a certified scuba diver, avid Tar Heels basketball fan, and nerdy comic book collector who enjoys working out and traveling (especially to Walt Disney World with my family!). We are a Smith family for sure--not only do I work at SMS but both of my kids completed middle school here, too! Go Cyclones!!

Assistant Principal

Greetings Cyclone families! I’m Sarah O’Shea, Assistant Principal at Smith Middle School. Growing up in North Carolina, my mother was an elementary school teacher, so I think it’s safe to say that education is in my blood. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill with Honors in Sociology and English Literature, I taught middle school Language Arts in rural northeastern North Carolina. Specifically, I’ve taught grades four through eight in Northampton, Franklin, and Vance Counties in North Carolina. My husband and I moved to Chapel Hill in 2012 when he began medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill. During this time, I began teaching Language Arts here at Smith. I’ve also worked as a Literacy Coach at Phillips and McDougle Middle Schools, which ignited my passion for school leadership. I returned to UNC-Chapel Hill to earn my Master of School Administration degree and completed my Principal Internship at Smith. In addition to my K-12 principal licensure, I am also certified to teach K-6 Elementary Education and grades 6-9 Language Arts. I’ve worked at Smith as a teacher, Principal Intern, and now Assistant Principal. I love the dedicated educators I work with daily at Smith, and getting to be a part of your children’s lives is truly an honor. My family and I call Chapel Hill home and are so appreciative that we are able to be a part of this community. As an educator, I firmly believe that all children can achieve at high levels and hope to model this throughout my interactions with faculty, students, and families. I’ve worked in education for over a decade, and middle school is truly my passion. If I can be of any assistance to you and your family, I’m easily reached by email or phone. Welcome to the Smith family!
